SQUADRON SURVIVORS
"It's like Nimble Quest and Vampire Survivors had a baby attack jet," is how I described it to my daughter. So nothing too groundbreaking, but a combination I've struggled to find.
Squadron Survivors is currently in early alpha and I am still adding new features to the game and improving stability and performance. I am looking for players interested enough to play the early version of the game, and hopefully also wanting to get involved in supporting its development.
I'm an older gamer and definitely feel like I have limited time to play, so games I can just casually jump into for 5-10 minutes at a time have become my go-to. I've wanted a military aircraft re-skinned Nimble Quest or Vampire Survivors for years and finally decided to just start making my own. My daughter has recently turned 18 and moved out so I'm working to rediscover old hobbies and game development has always been one of them.
Features:
- 16 playable aircraft
- 14 weapons
- 11 wingmen
- 4 formations
- 13 passive upgrades
- 5 levels
- Roguelite experience
Aircraft have different handling attitudes, from the high-speed of the Vipers to helicopters being able to stop and hover. Refining their feel is definitely something I'm looking to improve as well as additional formations and formation behaviors. Wingmen can be attained with level ups and there are currently 4 different formations with more to be added of both. Please note the Tomcat model has not been added (it's an F16 in Thunderbirds livery, right now), nor has the GA-UAV8 ("COMPLIANCE!").
Controls:
Supports mouse (RMB, LMB, MMB), keyboard+mouse (S and F keys), gamepad (X and O), and touch controls. Middle mouse button usage does cause issues with the webGL build that is playable above.
Weapons:
Featuring weapons like the GAU-8 Avenger, M61 Vulcan, and Hellfire missiles, I'm looking to keep it realistic, but also have fun with this. Weapon/particle effects and differentiation are very much a work-in-progress, as are additional weapons and evolutions, so please do make any requests you think might be appropriate as I'm always looking for inspiration.
Missions:
Current runs last 3 minutes until you encounter a boss, but I'm planning on full runs being at least 5-10 minutes. I have 5 initial levels laid out and planned and I am still doing a lot of experimentation with terrain textures and a few other possibilities, so the "terrain" is very much an active work in progress, as is balancing, which is why I've stopped the levels at 3 minutes for now. I do plan on a campaign mode with pre-designed levels once I've finalized the "endless" level modes.
Enemies:
I also have an assortment of ranged enemies from SAM sites and aircraft to ZSU 23-4s and anti-aircraft artillery to be added. Most of the enemies at this point will only shoot/hit you if you pass directly above them. Determining the speeds of projectiles and player balance with dodging is something I'm working on and more diverse enemies will be added shortly!
Requirements:
Playable on Windows, Linux, Android, most browsers, and iPhone, though I can only offer the first 4 options here. I cannot vouch for any of the various screen size resolutions that may be encountered so I do hope to hear back with some experiences in that regard. I only have an Android and a 32" monitor for testing. This game also was not intended for browser play so I consider the webGL build that is playable above an even clunkier version.
Thank you!
If you like what I'm doing and enjoy your time in the demo, or just the general idea and would like to show support, the Supporter Edition does contain the option to change your playable character and purchase upgrades. That will also be the Edition I continue to update on a weekly basis. Any purchase goes directly to developing this and any feedback or support is absolutely appreciated. I hope you'll forgive the rough edges and look forward to chatting with anyone into this sorta thing.
STOP KILLING GAMES TRANSPARENCY NOTICE: I started this project in May and have worked on it for a few hours every weekend since. I was having difficulty deciding whether to share or not since it's still so so early in development, but saw the Stop Killing Games game jam when it launched and thought why not - stop killing games, start killing tanks. Much of the actual work I did prior to the jam was sourcing models and SFX and visualization of how various aspects would play out and should be. Since the jam started I have put in hours on things that were undone and hidden beneath the surface, such as: 3D models for every playable character, actually separating weapon systems and projectiles, SFX added, new weapons added and old weapons tweaked, formations added and tweaked, collisions added, various VFX additions and tweaks, unique movement abilities such as airbraking and hover added. This project should not be judged equally with submissions created solely during that week-long game jam time frame.
